Why it's the BEST Region
The Okanogan region is the best region, and I will tell you some reasons why. If you are an outdoors type of person and want a place where you can hike, hunt, fish, and do water and snow sports this is the perfect place for you.
We have many Lakes and rivers such as the Okanogan River which empties into Lake Pateros, and enters the Columbia River, and Lake Chelan. There is many species in them such as, steelhead, salmon, large and smallmouth bass and many more!
Did I also mention we live right by the ocean so you can get your boat and go fishing and do water sports as some locals do. In the winter time you can do snow sports such as snowboarding and skiing. Some good places to do these are Sitzmark Ski Hill Home, Try Harper Mountain, Clearwater Ski Hill, and many more.
You can also hike here in the many hiking places that the Okanogan Regions has to offer. Some places you can hike are Olympic National Park, and forest, Vance Creek Park, and many others that you can find. We have different ranges of difficulty from beginning to expert it all depends on which trail you go to. On some of those trails you can horseback ride, and rock climb, and go bouldering which bouldering falls under the category of rock climbing.
There is also many hunting spots for people who want to bring home some game. Some more places you can go for this is Chiwawa River Trail Closure, Upper Mad River Seasonal Trail Closure, Jack Creek Fire Closure, Norse Peak Fire Closures, and there is a lot more, but make sure that your hunting during the right season! Ghost Town of Bodie
Introduction
It’s extremely obvious that you should definitely visit or relocate to the Okanogan Highlands, but you're probably wondering how to pass the time. One extreme tourist attraction is the ghost town of Bodie! Back in it’s day, Bodie was a place to come if you wanted to find gold. As a matter of fact, about 1.2 million US dollars in gold was discovered! And legend has it that the Bodie Creek still runs gold in color. And if that isn’t enough, this article will tell you all about other terrific facts about Bodie and why you should come, so get ready to be blown away, (but not literally, because the average wind in Bodie is 8.2 miles per
hour.)
History
Whether you want to or not, it’s always important to learn about the history of a place you plan on going to. So, first of all, you might be asking who founded Bodie in the first place. Well, the original town was started in 1896 by the prospectors Tommy Ryan and Phil Creasor, looking for gold at the mouth of the Bodie River. The original name of Bodie was Toradora, (Ghostowns.com, 2013). All that was there was a general store, blacksmith, livery barn, and houses. Because nearly all the buildings were made out of lumber, there was a saw mill moved there, too, (Ward, 2007). Also, mining was a major industry in Bodie, owned by the Bodie Mining Company, (bought by the Wrigley brothers who also were famous for making chewing gum, from the Dewitz brothers). 1902-1911 were the best years of the mine, and after that, the business kind of went out because of World War Two, (Ghost Towns of Washington, 2016). But finally, in 1944, the mines shut down for good. So you can see, Bodie has a huge party of history within its falling buildings, so come witness the once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about Washington's interesting past while having a great time doing it!
Sightseeing
Now that you know a little more about Bodie, let's focus on some things you absolutely don't want to miss out on. To begin with, you need to go to the log cabins in Bodie. Though about 121 years old, they have held up surprisingly well. You can even go into the houses and see all the items inside! Plus, some of the houses are untouched, and all of the beds, pots, pans, and other stuff are still there. You can even imagine how the prospectors lived! “We went there expecting to see some few old crappy houses to find out that the place is amazing. A full town left behind with all it's day to day stuff. Time has frozen in Bodie. Each house is different with different furniture inside.” says a visitor of Bodie. So, you need to look at all the amazing buildings!
Climate
Weather is really important when you are deciding when to go somewhere. For example, you don't ever want to go to the beach when it's snowing outside! If you want to go looking at the old houses, mines, and other historical sites in Bodie, you probably want to visit when it's fairly sunny or partly cloudy, unless you really like snow rain. Bodie’s dry season consists of late spring and is highest in mid summer. That is because the drying and warming of air in the Cascade Mountains comes off of the eastern slopes and into the Okanogan Highlands, causing it to be more of a desert place, (Fanning, 2015). Snow, however, is a different story. It includes November through mid February, (AccuWeather, 2017)! So make sure to pack your coats and hats, folks! As you can clearly visualize, Bodie has a variety of weathers to choose from, and they are all beautiful and unique in their own ways.
Dining
Although the population in Bodie is currently zero, there are plenty of places to eat. Everyone likes pizza, and there are a few pizzerias near Bodie such as Republic Pizza Company, Steve-O's, and Esther's Restaurant. Some other popular eateries include Freckles Gourmet Barbecue and Tugboats. I'm sure all those places are super yummy. Plus, all the restaurants listed above have four and one half to five stars! A customer of Esther’s Diner said, “The food was delicious, well priced, and served quickly!” (Google Maps, 2017). In summary, there are many locations to eat a great meal linear Bodie.
Conclusion
To sum it all up, I would highly suggest coming to visit the Okanogan Highlands, but most of all, come see Bodie! So plan a family road trip, stay for a while, or just hang out! There are so many opportunities and possibilities. Are you a photographer? Come take some beautiful pictures. Are you a history geek? Look at the old buildings. Are you just some random person reading this just because you’re bored? Come to Bodie, because Bodie is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
